GETEC and DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE launch pioneering project for sustainable energy production

Magdeburg/Lachendorf, 20. February 2024

The leading energy service provider GETEC and DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE a glo-bally active manufacturer of specialty papers, have recently signed contracts to construct a sustainable and emission-neutral energy supply for the production site in Lachendorf/Lower Saxony. GETEC will install a state-of-the-art CHP plant on the premises of DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE GmbH & CO. KG, which will not only generate sustainable process steam and electrical energy, but will also make a major contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.

The combined heat and power plant to be built by GETEC will represent significant progress in terms of sustainable production for DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE and the CO2 footprint of the district of Celle. Only renewable fuels in the form of straw and waste wood will be used. A special focus was placed on the versatility of the fuels; up to 100% cereal straw or up to 60% residual wood can be used. With a thermal firing capacity of approx. 55 MW, the plant will supply 55 t/h of steam for the pro-duction of specialty papers, whilst generating up to 12.5 MW of electricity for the on-site power.“. The plant's steam turbine is designed so that varying levels of electricity can be generated depending on the demand situation, without affecting the supply of process steam.

GETEC Platform Germany CEO Dr. Thomas Stephanblome emphasized the im-por-tance of the project for the environment and highlighted the good coopera-tion: "The signing of the contract marks another milestone in our mission to drive for-ward emission-neutral energy solutions. Our GETEC approach is an accelerati-on program for more sustainability, whereby our customers' energy supply is conver-ted from a fossil supply to a carbon-neutral solution - and this is not only sustainable, but also absolutely economical. We are proud to make a positive con-tribution to the environment together with DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE."

Dr. Matthias Rauhut, CEO of DREWSEN SPEZIALPAPIERE, highlights the importance of the CHP plant for the company's goal of achieving 80% climate neutrality by 2030. "Together with the investments in energy efficiency and renewable energies such as wind and solar power, the biomass power plant plays a decisive role on this path. With the chosen plant design and the variable fuel mix, we believe we are well equip-ped to meet the challenges of the energy transition, and can contribute to a signifi-cant reduction in CO2 emissions."

Commercial operation of the plant is planned for the third quarter of 2026.
