Berlin Exhibition Grounds

Messe Berlin with its fair grounds comprising nearly 550,000 m2 of floor space, 170,000 m2 of hall space (26 halls) and the International Congress Centre (ICC) Berlin is a crucial economic factor for the German capital and is among the ten top-selling trade fair corporations in the world.

The customised GETEC energy solution

The challenge

The energy costs associated with annual heat requirements of approx. 60 million kWh and power requirements of approx. 37 million kWh as well as the associated CO2 emissions represent a significant locational factor. GETEC was asked to develop a cost-efficient and sustainable solution.

The goal

Therefore, Messe Berlin’s goal was to lower the energy costs and the CO2 emissions.

Our solution

Energy savings performance contracting and innovative plant engineering enabled GETEC to lower the energy consumption of Messe Berlin by approximately 30%. This saves approx. 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

Facts and Figures

UNESCO world heritage site housing estate "Weiße Stadt" in Berlin-Reinickendorf

The successful transition toward renewable energies is a collaborative effort. GETEC in cooperation with real estate companies has been developing successful energy efficiency initiatives since 2013. The foundation was laid with Deutsche Wohnen SE and the milestone project “Weiße Stadt [White City]” of the joint energy services company G+D Energiemanagement mbH.

The customised GETEC energy solution

The goal is to generate additional profits with a sustainable and consistent realisation of all possible savings potentials.

The challenge

Supply of approx. 2,500 households with heat / combined heat and power station and district heating network with 31 substations

The goal

Reduction of the primary energy factor of the Weiße Stadt district heating territory from 1.3 to 0.89

Our solution

•  Set-up of 2 x 5.8 MW hot water boilers
•  Maximum energy efficiency by using economisers in the waste gas stream of the hot water boilers
•  Set-up of an ultra-modern CHP unit (1 MWel)
•  Feed-in into the public 10 kV grid

Facts and Figures

CO2 savings

Reduction of the emission by 3,800 t/a

The customised GETEC energy solution

Modern and efficient energy supply concept for the chemical industry.

The challenge

The existing supply of power to the plant using thermal oil and steam no longer met current demands and efficiency criteria. A new supply concept was to be developed to ensure the future security of supply.

The goal

The vent gas produced on site in the storage tanks should also be utilised as an energy source and thus used efficiently and in an environmentally-friendly fashion instead of being discarded in thermal post-combustion as was previously the case.

Our solution

GETEC developed a highly efficient, sustainable and economical supply concept that supplies the entire production site in Speyer with thermal oil and steam. The GETEC engineers opted to use two thermal oil boilers fired with natural gas and a steam generator indirectly heated with thermal oil. What makes this procedure so special The vent gas that accumulates during the production is thermally utilised in the system.

Facts and Figures

CO2 savings

approx. 2,800 t/a

Components

2 natural gas fired thermal oil boilers
1 indirect steam generator

Supply

Thermal oil with a flow temperature of 340°C
Saturated steam with a pressure of 23 bar (above atmospheric) and a temperature of approx. 222°C

Installed capacity

Nominal heat output of the thermal oil boiler: 8,300 kWth each
Steam output of indirect steam generator: 13 t/h

The customised GETEC energy solution

Modern and efficient energy supply concept for the dairy industry.

The challenge

Additional energy is required for the production systems of the dairy works due to an expansion in the production and the associated increased energy requirements. A new and efficient energy supply concept has to be designed and realised for this purpose.

The goal

Development and expansion of a cutting-edge energy concept.

Our solution

Within the framework of a management contract, initially GETEC constructed a steam generation plant followed by a natural gas-fired engine-based cogeneration system.
Three gas engines (CHP units) simultaneously supply heat for the drying and the various cleaning processes as well as electricity that substitutes the consumption drawn from the grid.

Facts and Figures

CO2 savings

10,500 t/a
