The customised GETEC energy solution

Modern and efficient energy supply concept for the chemical industry.

The challenge

Because the previous steam supply from the power station Mumsdorf was shut down in the summer of 2013, the management of the chemical company was looking for a viable, ultra-efficient and economical energy supply.

The goal

In the context of the supply concept, the idea was to also destroy the climate-damaging nitrous oxide (N2O) that accumulates on site, thereby lowering the greenhouse gas emission.

Our solution

GETEC opted to install two separate shell boilers. One is fired with particularly economical brown coal dust, whilst the other is fired with natural gas.

Facts and Figures

CO2 savings

approximately 100,000 tons of CO2 equivalents per year

Plant

Combined heat and power station with 2 steam boilers and back pressure steam turbine

Supply

Steam, electricity

Installed capacity

Thermal output: 37.1 MW;
Electrical output: 681 kW

We would never have dared to imagine that the problem with nitrous oxide can be resolved with pulverised lignite firing. […] This helps Radici achieve major savings in emissions trading, close to a million euros each year.

SCHOELLERSHAMMER GmbH & Co. KG

The SCHOELLERSHAMMER paper-mill is producing corrugated base sheets using two paper making machines in the long-standing business location Düren. With a corporate history of 230 years, it is among the oldest paper-mills in Germany. Nearly 800 tons of paper is leaving the factory premises daily. With its 24/7 continuous operation, SCHOELLERSHAMMER is making an important contribution to life-cycle management, thereby conserving resources.

The customised GETEC energy solution

High-efficiency CHP plant secures paper production.

The challenge

With a new paper making machine, the paper-mill has marked a milestone in its more than 230-year history of the family business, and substantially boosted its production capacity. Due to the planned increase in the paper production from 230,000 tons to more than 500,000 tons a year, the energy need has risen as well.

The goal

Development of a high-efficiency combined heat and power plant that fulfils the requirements for a sustainable energy supply at the Düren location, while at the same time contributing to the success of the transition toward renewable energies.

Our solution

The plant generates approx. 180 GWh/a of heat with a maximum steam capacity of 71 tons per hour. The electricity generated with combined heat and power covers the combined heating and power station’s own needs as well as partly the needs of the paper-mill. Thus, the energy supply to the long-standing location in Düren has now been secured well into the future.

With pulverised lignite + natural gas + use of sewage gas from the sewage treatment plant of the paper-mill is an example of a multi-fuel fired plant

Medical Centre Wahrendorff

The head office of the medical centres is located approx. 20 km east of the state capital Hanover in Sehnde, along with the two locations Ilten and Köthenwald. The medical centres provide outpatient, semi-inpatient and inpatient care in emergency psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy. The entire medical centre has 310 hospital beds and 253 spaces for semi-inpatient care. Personalised and high-quality professional care is delivered to more than 1,060 residents in the different areas of the care home.

The customised GETEC energy solution

The challenge

Supply of the medical centre with heat for space heating, ventilation, hot water as well as electricity, if necessary, produced with state-of-the art, efficient energy generation systems.

The goal

Development of a sustainable heat and energy supply concept for all areas of the medical centre

Our solution

The various buildings are supplied by means of a total of 32 natural gas-based and/or HEL-based heat generation systems.
GETEC set up among other things two CHP units with an electrical output of 140 kW each in the Juliane Wahrendorff medical centre in Ilten as well as in the care home in Köthenwald.
The heat generated in the CHP units is used to supply the base load (heat); the generated electricity is fed into the medium voltage systems of the medical centres Ilten and Köthenwald. The refurbishment and expansion of the local heating network at the same time created combined heat supply systems, which make it possible to switch off heat generation units, thereby optimising the operational life of the CHP units. In the context of their refurbishment in 2015/2016, all heat generation systems were switched to energy-efficient condensing boiler technology.

Facts and Figures

Plant

32 heat generation systems with a total output of 7.4 MW as well as 2 CHP units.

Supply

Heat generation system: Heat for space heating, ventilation and hot water
CHP unit: Heat and electricity
