Heating with ice

GETEC AND TE GROUP TO COMMISSION ICE STORAGE FACILITY IN THE "HANSAPARK NUREMBERG" DISTRICT

The construction work for the ice storage facility in the "Hansapark Nuremberg" district, which began in January, has been completed. As of today, the district is supplied with climate-neutral heat and energy. The energy service provider GETEC implemented the sustainable energy concept, the centerpiece of which is the underground ice storage facility with a diameter of 9.5 meters and a height of 5 meters.

The ice storage is ON: The energy service provider GETEC, together with the project developer te group, has put a sustainable energy concept into operation, which supplies the Hansapark located in the southwest of Nuremberg. The centerpiece is an underground ice storage tank with a diameter of 9.5 meters and a height of 5 meters, which is operated with a combination of heat pumps and recoolers.

The project's guiding principle is "heating and cooling": solar and ambient heat are fed into the water-filled storage tank. A heat pump extracts the stored heat, which in turn is used to heat the adjacent building complexes. As a result of the heat extraction, the temperature in the storage tank drops to freezing point at the same time. The crystallization energy subsequently released as the water freezes is also used in the form of heat. This amounts to over 90 watt hours per kilogram of water. The ice storage tank in the district, with its 300 cubic meters of water volume, can therefore supply the same amount of energy purely through the one-off freezing process of the water as is generated by burning around 2,900 liters of heating oil. The ice produced in the ice storage tank during heat pump heating operation is in turn used to air-condition the buildings in the summer - and without any additional energy input.

"Hansapark in Nuremberg is a neighborhood of the future - it is sustainable, efficient and smart. With an innovative combination of ice storage and heat pumps, GETEC has succeeded in making the heat and energy supply not only absolutely efficient, but also virtually climate-neutral," said Michael Lowak, CEO of GETEC Group's Real Estate segment.

"Hansapark is an excellent example of how CO2 can be saved by using intelligent energy concepts and digital technologies in real estate. The project has beacon character for responsible and sustainable action in the real estate market. This is also confirmed by the German Sustainable Building Council with its Gold Certificate," adds Stefan Keller, Managing Partner of te group.
