- New heating concept to reduce the district’s carbon footprint
- Around 3,000 residential units will gradually be supplied with more climate-friendly heating in future
Magdeburg, 25 June 2026 – GETEC is planning to further develop the heating supply in Magdeburg’s Reform district. The company already supplies more than 40 hectares there with heating and hot water via several central heating plants and local heating networks.
In total, the supply area covers around 185,000 square metres of residential floor space – equivalent to some 3,000 residential units and thus affecting several thousand residents. In addition, there are several buildings used for commercial or other purposes, as well as public facilities such as school buildings, nurseries and a sports hall.
Gradual transition to a climate-friendly heat supply
With its planned heating concept, GETEC is preparing the neighbourhood for the regulatory requirements of heating networks from 2030 onwards, whilst also contributing to the local authority’s climate targets. The plan is to initially increase the share of renewable heat to at least 30 per cent from 2030 and to make the supply greenhouse gas-neutral by 2045 gradually. From 2030, this will enable savings of around 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ per year; in the long term, the annual savings will rise to around 4,000 tonnes of CO₂ by 2045.
The core of the plan is a new sustainable heating plant on Quittenweg. In the future, two-stage heat pumps will generate hot water year-round and supply it to the blocks of flats via new heating networks. In addition, GETEC is focusing on maintaining and refurbishing existing heat generators, which will remain integrated into the system and be gradually replaced by the new heating plant by 2045. The transformation will take place in stages, in a planned manner and in close consultation with the housing associations involved.
GETEC presents heating concept in the Reform neighbourhood
“The heating transition is not just about new-builds, but also about the existing housing stock. With the heating concept for the Reform neighbourhood, we are demonstrating how existing supply structures can be modernised and gradually steered towards a climate-friendly future,” says Guido Zimmermann, CEO of GETEC Germany.

At the second information event on 19 June, GETEC presented the planned heating concept to representatives of the local housing cooperatives and the housing association, and provided insights into the next steps in the transformation. Participants included WOBAU Magdeburg, MWG Magdeburg, the Stadtfelder Housing Co-operative, the ‘Stadt Magdeburg von 1954’ Housing Co-operative, the Otto von Guericke Housing Co-operative, IW Bauwert-Consult & Verwaltungsgesellschaft, and others. The focus was on dialogue with the stakeholders involved and on how a modern, reliable and affordable heating supply can be jointly implemented in the existing housing stock.

Project planning for the new heating plant has started
GETEC is already in discussions with the housing associations involved, the relevant authorities, the City of Magdeburg and the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) regarding funding for the project. Work is currently underway regarding site development and heating plant design. In parallel, assessments are being carried out on planning permission, compatibility with the residential area and the requirements for operating the plant. Planning is due to be completed by spring 2027; construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2028.
