- New spaces, new pathways, technology and personalised care for more effective emergency management that is better attuned to the needs of the local community
Erba, Italy, 30 June 2026 – This morning, the Erba Hospital inaugurated its new emergency department, an expansion and refurbishment project that marks a significant step forward in emergency and urgent care for the Erba and Como areas in Italy. The project has reimagined the entire patient journey to ensure faster response times, a welcoming environment and an increasingly safe, personalised and patient-centred care centre.
The new department is organised according to a model based on the intensity of care, which allows each patient to be directed towards the most appropriate pathway from the moment of triage. At the heart of the reorganisation is the RAT (Rapid Assessment and Treatment) process, which enables a faster clinical assessment and an immediate determination of the most appropriate course of treatment.
Key new features include a completely refurbished waiting room and triage area, which are now more spacious, brighter and more comfortable; a modern high-complexity area with two stations dedicated to time-critical emergencies and a emergency trauma room for the management of major trauma cases; new consultation rooms and fast-track pathways; dedicated spaces for frail and vulnerable patients; and a new short-term intensive observation (Osservazione Breve Intensiva - OBI) area with six beds, designed to manage complex clinical cases that can be resolved within 48–72 hours, facilitating faster discharges and reducing unnecessary admissions.
“The opening of the new emergency department is a moment of great significance for our hospital and for the entire community we serve,” says Vincenzo Trovato, Chief Executive of the Erba Hospital. “We have invested in a modern organisational model that puts the patient at the centre, improving care pathways, patient reception and our ability to respond to emergencies. The new structure enables us to ensure more timely, appropriate and safe care, thanks to spaces designed to address varying clinical complexities and ever-greater integration between professionals, departments and local services. This achievement reinforces the role of Erba Hospital as a key healthcare centre for the region.”
Particular attention has been paid to care pathways for frail and vulnerable patients, who will benefit from dedicated, protected pathways, developed in close collaboration with the hospital’s other departments and the social care service, to ensure comprehensive care and, where necessary, supported discharge.
C.E.I. S.p.A., a company subject to the management and coordination of GETEC Italia S.p.A. and already responsible for the maintenance of the hospital’s facilities, oversaw the extension and refurbishment works on the emergency department at Erba Hospital. The project was divided into five phases to ensure the service remained operational, with the new areas being progressively adapted to their various functions as the works progressed.
The most significant achievement was keeping the department operational for almost the entire duration of the works. Over approximately ten months of construction, the service was suspended for a total of just eight hours. This achievement was possible thanks to collaboration with the hospital management team and rigorous project planning.
With the new emergency department, the Erba Hospital has taken a significant step forward in the development and modernisation of its services, offering the community a modern facility, more effective care pathways and an emergency management system capable of meeting the challenges of a growing region, a tangible investment in people’s health, designed to stand the test of time.
