GETEC and BeGreen establish cooperation for innovative bio-dust applications

Emmen / Magdeburg, 05 May 2022

The leading energy service provider GETEC has founded a joint venture with the Dutch company BeGreen Refinery B.V.. The aim of the cooperation is to offer innovative and market-ready bio-dust applications for heat supply to joint customers. The bio-fuels produced by refining processes, such as Enhanced Forest Residue (EFR), are energetically utilised by GETEC's dust combustion technology. In view of rising prices and declining security of supply for fossil fuels such as gas, this innovative technology represents a sustainable building block in the fuel mix of the future. A first industrial-scale plant will go into operation in early 2023.

GETEC Platform Netherlands, based in GETEC PARK.EMMEN, together with its partner BeGreen, has succeeded in further developing dust combustion technology, which was previously based on fossil fuels. By further developing the proven technology for burning fossil dusts, it will also be possible to use EFR and other biomass-based fuels in the future. The raw material for the fuel comes from forest residues in the proximity of Emmen. Biochemicals such as furfural, methanol and acetic acid can also be produced in the process of producing EFR. After the implementation of a biomass boiler with a steam output of 18 t/h at 30 bar, the first line will go into operation at the beginning of 2023.

"The energy and climate change and current developments are accelerating the shift towards more sustainability and efficient solutions. With their innovative expertise, GETEC and BeGreen are drivers and supporters on the path to a climate-neutral industry. We are united by the goal of developing economical, scalable and at the same time sustainable services and solutions for our customers, while substantially reducing their carbon footprint," says Thomas Schoepke, CEO of GETEC Platform Netherlands. Due to the multitude of benefits that arise from the use of EFR, further sites are already being analysed. In particular, existing plants with restrictions for other green concepts (e.g. storage limitations, biomass shortage) are in the focus of conversion to EFR. But EFR could also become a powerful and sustainable fuel for new plants.

EFR is refined woody biomass, also known as black pellets. For refining, wood residues are treated with various processes such as steam explosion. The treatment breaks down the fibrous structure of the wood and removes some of the volatile components, increasing the carbon content. Pressed into pellets, the EFR has coal-like properties with improved energy density, paintability, homogeneity and easier handling, transport and storage - compared to untreated biomass.

About BeGreen
BeGreen, founded in 2010, has a solid track record as developer and operator of biomass heating industrial boilers. To maintain its pioneering role in the field of bioenergy, BeGreen has actively been seeking proven technology that meets the cascading principles, such as steam explosion. At GETEC PARK.EMMEN BeGreen is developing an EFR plant (capacity: 125,000 tons) that is scheduled to come online early 2024.
