GETEC signs cooperation agreement for the use of clean hydrogen from the UAE

Abu Dhabi / Magdeburg / Muttenz, March 21st 2022

GETEC Group today became one of the first German companies to sign a cooperation agreement with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) for the use of hydrogen produced in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In order to bring this promising energy efficiently to Europe, it will be transported in the form of ammonia. The signing took place during the visit of a business delegation of the German Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck in Abu Dhabi, in which GETEC participated. Following an initial test delivery of blue ammonia, the cooperation is to be expanded to include the supply of green ammonia, produced fully using renewable energy, which can be reformed into green hydrogen in Europe.

In order to set up the logistics structures for clean hydrogen import into Germany as quickly as possible, blue ammonia will initially be delivered. Blue ammonia as a carrier for hydrogen is produced from natural gas, but unlike gray hydrogen, the CO2 produced in the process is not released into the environment but stored. Green hydrogen or ammonia is produced by the electrolysis process of water using electricity from renewable energies.

"We are pleased to have found a competent and potent partner in ADNOC. The cooperation with ADNOC is an important step for GETEC to further develop hydrogen and ammonia as an energy carrier for a climate-neutral future. GETEC has already established competence centers for hydrogen at an early stage. With the help of energy contracting solutions, we can help our customers to optimally adapt to the green, new hydrogen world," says Thomas Wagner, CEO of the GETEC Group.

Dr. Guido Zimmermann, CEO of GETEC Platform Switzerland at the Muttenz site and head of the Competence Center for Green Hydrogen, adds: "The possibilities are many. We have ideal conditions for splitting green ammonia back into green hydrogen and feeding it directly into the natural gas grid as an admixture for thermal use, for example. The blue or green ammonia can also be used immediately in a fuel cell for initial pilot projects. We have a partner for this and could start a first small pilot plant for CO2 neutral power production. Our goal is to support our customers in every aspect of the energy transition. Green hydrogen is one of the essential components. "

In December 2021, it was announced that the UAE will create a global clean energy powerhouse intended to spearhead the country‘s drive to net-zero carbon by 2050. Consolidating their combined efforts in renewable energy and green hydrogen, ADNOC, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA), and Mubadala Investment Company (Mubadala) will partner under the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) brand. The partnership between three Abu Dhabi champions will have a combined current, committed, and exclusive capacity of over 23 Gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy, with the expectation of reaching well over 50 GW total capacity by 2030 and aspirations to grow this figure further.

Green ammonia can be used as a carbon-free fuel in a wide range of industrial applications, including transportation, power generation, refineries, and industries such as chemicals, steel, wastewater treatment, cement and fertilizer production.
ADNOC has a long history of responsible operations and proactive carbon management. The company's emissions intensity per barrel is among the lowest in the industry. ADNOC is also an early pioneer in the emerging market for clean hydrogen and its carrier fuels, such as ammonia, and has driven UAE leadership in creating international hydrogen value chains and a local hydrogen ecosystem.
